That seems interesting, though you honestly wouldn't cut weigh by a significant amount - if your just thinking about the chimney and the base connection, well that should hardly use any glue, definitely less than 0.01 grams.

Also, how has everyone been creating jigs for the bases, i'm having a lot of troubling making the base - if anyone can post a picture of a basic jig, or even just explain a possible idea, id appreciate it a lot, making the base with all the angles correctly is that only thing holding back our design process.

Well, I wasn't actually in it for losing mass with the glue. Because, my teacher was explaining to me how the joints were super strong, and that they are actual more efficient than with actual glue.
It's so easy, even a Badger could do it.

Vizard007, your comment about the japanese construction is partly mythical. The traditional japanese post-beam construction suffered extensively during the 1995 earthquake. You can read this article as reference:

Japan has been doing a lot of work of research to improve their own dwellings, you can see some spectacular videos here:

Have fun!

Oh, that's a shame, I thought it could be really cool/fun xD Thanks for the info though, now I won't be wasting my time. (As much as usual at least)

Edit

But I mean, it broke because of an Earthquake? I'm pretty sure we won't be having those during competition, so couldn't a design like that actually work?

Wait - r u saying the joint would be stronger WITHOUT glue? I don't see how that is physically possible, even if the glue adds no strength to the joint, how can it possibly be weaker than with no glue?

Well. I mean, just the technique used. As in, glue would also be pointless. My teacher was saying that if it was done correctly, it would kinda be like on giant I-beam but more complex. Every part of the tower would be pushing against another part of the tower and eventually making a state of "equilibrium" probably not the right word.
It's so easy, even a Badger could do it.

Vizard007 wrote:So, I was talking with my coach, and he told me a story on how the Japanese design houses without using a single screw or glue or anything. So, I was thinking, making a tower without glue at the joints? (The ones connecting the base with the "chimney", NOT the supports) Crazy idea? Or do you guys think it might work?
That will not be legal because the "chimney" can be detached from the base. The tower must be a single structure.

Oh, I see. =/ Oh wells. So, then what do you guys think about bending Bass wood for the four "pillars" of the tower? Because Bass would is extremely bendable against the grain, but extremely hard to destroy along the grain. So, if you bending four pillars and put them together with supports then the pressure from the top would be along the grain, and the bottom of the tower could bend and have more surface area on the "ground" so it would be harder for the tower to twist?
It's so easy, even a Badger could do it.
