YES. It takes so much luck.aubrey048 wrote:My regionals consistently used styrofoam balls, pipe cleaners, clothespins, and beads. Not horrible. But still, we didn't win any medals. 8th place. I'm a WI/DI veteran I guess (2 years) but I'm tired of it now. Next year, it's time to move on for me.
Strategies. . . hmm. . . my past partners and I never had a strategy (well, this year our strategy was to practice but that was it!). Even the year I medaled my partner and I didn't practice once. So I guess I'm not of much help. A lot of it is luck. But practice with many different building materials can never hurt.

It's... harder? It's supposed to be more difficult, but like regionals, anything goes, really.

Yes, they're more complicated... I also think it's because we don't have a lot of time to study for our events and we have to be in at least 4 different events. Regionals are Staurday so that I think is what makes it more complicated. Then again, this is my first year so I don't have much say in this.
Events: Write It Do It, Disease Detectives, Mission Possible, Food Science. Quote~ Friend: What Happened? Me: Dumb Sidewalk. Friend: How can a sidewalk be dumb? Me: IT TRIED TO CATCH ME WHEN I FELL!~ and all of this happened at regionals this year.

I think that its not just luck. Obviously, if you get something you have practiced with it is easier, but you have to be able to quickly create a set of terms that your partner will be able to understand. If the building materials are similar to those you have used before, you can use similar terminology. Otherwise, use a similar basic strategy and use terms that make sense.

Re: Write It Do It B/C
True, but even if you practice a lot certain variables can negatively affect your performance. Nervousness affected my partner and I. Because of this, mistakes were made on both parts that I doubt would have been made had we been merely practicing. In addition, no amount of practice can make up for a mismatched pair. If you and your partner think similarly, you're made. My first partner and I seem to think in similar terms, and we medaled without practicing ONCE. Chemistry between partners is a HUGE thing in WIDI. But nothing is certain in this event.Gemma W wrote:I think that its not just luck. Simply put, Write It Do It is hard, and completely unpredictable. Everyone who has ever participated in the event has courage.

It's true that you need a connection with your partner. Me and my partner have been best friends since pre-school, so we understand each other pretty well. And nervousness can definitely affect your work. But clearly defining terms, both before competition and during, can definitely help.

Wow, placed 20th at regionals for WIDI. Agreed, it is unbelievably unpredictable. Honestly, I thought it was easy, but my brain just wasn't focused and we're going to see how well we do with switched roles.
