It may be useful to know some diseases, but the majority of the event is finding statistics regarding a stroy of an outbreak that they give you. Vocabulary can also be a large part of the event, and they may sometimes ask you about famous epidemiologists and diseases, mostly as tiebreakers. This is a very good handout for this event as it covers almost everything for the event. The Science Olympiad homepage has very good resources, and the link goes to Disease Detectives specifically.

The rules should give you a pretty good idea of what to study.

As for sources of info, if the Wiki (Disease Detectives Wiki) and the links on soinc don't give you what you're looking for, there's always Google.

What is the difference between a vehicle and a fomite?

Fomite - A physical object that serves to transmit an infectious agent from person to person, such as a comb infested with head lice

Vehicle - Objects such as food, water, biological products(e.g. blood) and fomites(see above) that may indirectly transmit an infectious agent from a reservoir to a host

All fomites are vehicles, but not all vehicles are fomites.

EDIT: Basically, know the ten steps of an outbreak investigation really well. Research each step, and figure out the equations necessary. Odds ratio, relative risk, attack rate...
