Re: New York 2019
1. Gelinas
Overall just an extremely strong team, no doubt they are going to nats based on invi performance
2. Eagle Hill
Very strong team, did well last year and pretty good this year, a strong contender for nat
3. Murphy
This is pretty argumentative in terms of the 2nd/3rd spot. Very strong performance last year, but hard to judge based on lack of invi results
4. Goff
Good performance at Cornell, most likely will get top 5.
5. C.J. Hooker
Good LISO and I think (?) good Rustin results
6. Bay Academy
Don't even think they'll get this high, but anything is possible I guess
7. South Woods
They did well at regionals, they might place higher though
8. Pleasantville
Based on LISO results
9. C.P. Weber
Constantly being beat by B and C teams, they might not even make top 10
10. Islip
Based on poor LISO results
Overall just an extremely strong team, no doubt they are going to nats based on invi performance

Bay Academy got 7th at Cornell, and you're putting them 6th at states...GabeAtwa wrote:1. Gelinas

As Dr. Cubbin would probably say, that crystal ball needs a little polishing

Re: New York 2019
My guess it's a joke prediction; Bay Academy got 5th last year, no serious prediction is putting them lower than that.

Re: New York 2019
So I know I’m relatively new to putting out rankings, but I feel like it’s late enough into the season and I have enough of a knowledge of the state to put out some valid Division C predictions, so...
1. Columbia - I feel like this one is pretty easy to predict, and I think all the stats point towards it. In particular, their performance at Cornell, beating Solon by over 40 points. Their lowest event was 16th and their consistent single digit placing against such a stacked field make me feel that they most likely won’t have a problem with winning states, possibly similar to 2016 when they won by 20 points? We’ll see I suppose but their performance here is indicative of strong results to come.
2. Ward Melville - Ah Ward. Cornell treated them very well too, coming short only to one other team other than Columbia, being Solon. Same case as Columbia, I imagine their strong events at Cornell will carry over to states with little issue. The gap between them and Columbia was somewhat large, so I don’t see them closing that. Oh, also LISO, they performed exceptionally, earning 3rd, losing only to West Windsor North A and B. Their 30s and 40s there turned to single digits at Cornell, and I’m sure their improvement will only be continuous.
3. Fayetteville-Manlius - Their Cornell results were less stellar, but still truly amazing. Taking 5th, but still losing to Ward by about 40 points. I think they will likely improve their 20s but I do believe Columbia and Ward will be quite tough to beat. I think they can do it though, but only time will tell I suppose?
4. Syosset - I'm putting Syosset at 4th because of their outstanding showing at invitationals this year. Most notably, LISO, where they took 4th, coming 5 points behind Ward Melville!! Also at Brown, where they legitimately challenged Acton-Boxborough, coming really close to beating them. And yes, I know, Syosset lost to Stuyvesant at Cornell, but I'll attribute that to a poor showings in like 2 events, which I know they will be able to fix in time for states. Syosset has had great showings as LISO, Brown, and Cornell, and I'm sure this powerful team's great performance will continue into states.
5. Stuyvesant - Up next is the city school of Stewie Vesant and they have done really well at invitationals this year, most notably Cornell where they took 6th place, 20 points behind Fayetteville! However, Stuyvesant's Yale performance was a bit underwhelming, finishing just behind Kellenberg, which seemed abnormal. Their LISO results were good, and given their regional results I expect them to continue killing it at states as they have in years past.
6. The Mount Academy - A friendly school to us, The Mount is a school I wouldn't want to go up against in competition. Their building events are absolutely INSANE (see Yale results for more info) and given their regional results I think they have also mastered their testing events. I know these kids, they work extremely hard, and if there is a weak point in their team, they will fix it. While the Mount finished behind us at Yale and LISO, not to mention the small upstate Columbia invitational, where we beat them by 23, I expect them to fully come through and do extremely well at states.
7. Great Neck South - Our Western Nassau rivals, I find it hard to rank Great Neck South due to their relative lack of invitational attendance, as other than LISO and Regionals I havent seen much from them. However, given their regionals performance (a sound victory by 30 points), and their LISO showing (8th!!) I think Great Neck South is definitely one to watch out for as we head for states, as in years past they have proven to do very well. Do I see them passing the Mount? Maybe. It's possible, they did it in 2016. I'd say these two are relatively interchangeable but if I had to make a prediction now, this would be it.
8. Kellenberg - So we have had a pretty good season this year, albeit a rocky start at LISO. We did pretty well at Yale and we won aforementioned Columbia against Chaminade and the Mount and Spackenkill. Yes our Cornell performance was lackluster but we are working to fix our bomb events (mainly builds) and I expect us to pull out more successful results. I do believe that we are basically even with the next team however...
9. Chaminade - Before you come for me saying "But Chaminade beat Kellenberg at regionals and LISO!!" yes I know. These margins were by single digit points however. I believe our wider margin victories at Columbia and Cornell however provide evidence in the other direction. However, Chaminade turned in a great result at Brown with 5th place! So, I'm not so sure. I think Chaminade is a strong team who we are basically evenly matched with, and thus I think our spots are interchangeable. As for their really close wins, a victory is a victory, so I can't discount that for them. But like I said, 8 and 9 I think are relatively interchangeable. Idk.
10. Spackenkill/Townsend Harris/Staten Island Tech - I dont really know who to give this last spot to so im kinda copping out as I dont wanna make a wrong choice. All three of these teams have attended invitationals this year, with most of them turing in pretty good results, and I think any of them could reach into the top 10. They all did really well at their regionals also, putting up really good fights for second place. They are all strong teams that I would need to see more of to rank effectively. Spackenkill put up a good fight at Columbia, earning 4th to us, The Mount, and Chaminade. Townsend Harris was at Yale and they did pretty well there given the field. Staten Island Tech finished behind us at LISO, but they had some strong events, and they came close to Stuyvesant at regionals, so I imagine they will be working hard leading up to states. I'm not so sure.
Did I make reasonable predictions? Did I not even come close? I guess we will see, but let me know of your thoughts on these. I feel like my predictions are justified and I tried to back each one up with as much statistical evidence as I can. But ya know, sometimes hard work can top statistics, so we will see.
Thanks for reading and by the way good job to these NY teams and to all the other ones on a great season thus far! Less than a month to go!

Re: New York 2019
Inspired by East's Pennsylaniva Prediction Contest and Unome's Georgia Prediction Contest, I thought I'd do one for New York as well! While I'm still doing this for B and C, I understand that B and C States occur on different dates, and so I'm opening the voting for Division C first and then about 3 weeks before Division B States I'll open up that poll. The link to vote for the Top 10 Places for Division C States is here: https://docs.google.com/forms/d/e/1FAIp ... sp=sf_link. I give more details in the link but just remember that there's nothing to lose by voting so I encourage you to vote even if you only know one team. Feel free to look up regionals results and past state results on the NY State Science Olympiad website and scioly.org to guide your responses if you need a refresher. Above all, have fun!

I'd put GNS higher then this, they had a impressive showing at Princeton, and got 7th. I wouldn't personally put them lower then 5th place.Giantpants wrote: 7. A suggestion for this poll, could you make it so that the team choices are like a dropdown menu with all the teams that are going to states (thats how east does his PA ones) , mainly so that I don't just forget a team out of nowhere and prevents people from botching the spelling of nameslumosityfan wrote:Inspired by East's Pennsylaniva Prediction Contest and Unome's Georgia Prediction Contest, I thought I'd do one for New York as well! I was thinking of that but I can't find the full list of State Teams anywhere. If someone could find one that would be greatly appreciated.Anomaly wrote:A suggestion for this poll, could you make it so that the team choices are like a dropdown menu with all the teams that are going to states (thats how east does his PA ones) , mainly so that I don't just forget a team out of nowhere and prevents people from botching the spelling of nameslumosityfan wrote:Inspired by East's Pennsylaniva Prediction Contest and Unome's Georgia Prediction Contest, I thought I'd do one for New York as well! Annoyingly, there isn't one yet (and I'd love to make one, but they haven't even released team numbers so it's not possible).lumosityfan wrote:I was thinking of that but I can't find the full list of State Teams anywhere.
