More literally, the California Trail cut through Nebraska, which is literally "between Montana and Oklahoma." Maybe it could have something to do with 2015 nats? Maybe someone who medaled, etc.?

Yeah guys, I just realized: aren't we supposed to be heading to California? So either this is a clue, or I messed up my history. (plus, it may not be referencing the state.
