You will be provided a microscope, the only possible advantage in bringing one is not having to share if they don't have one per station. Even then, there are rarely issues with not having access to the microscope.

Can anyone direct me to a flow chart or give me a series of steps for identifying what's in a mixture?

Also, what methods of mixture separation are likely to show up at state?

I think you're confusing that with potions and poisons, but for the sake of it, you will see chromatography, filtration, magnetism, decantation, and other simple separation. They probably won't give you anything that requires heat like evaporation and distillation, but be prepared for anything.

Does chromatography solution affect a test differently than water would? I usually use water but states had a separate glass of "chromatography solution" to use. Does anyone know how to make such a solution?

I'm pretty sure they labeled it "chromatography solution" to indicate that it was just for chromatography. There isn't a "recipe" for chromatography solution - it all depends on the type of pen. If it's a sharpie, you would want to use alcohol. If it's a marker, water would work just fine.

Does anyone know if there is a plastics flow chart? I can't find one anywhere that has all possible science olympiad plastics. If anyone knows a simple way to identify mixtures, I would appreciate guidelines for this task.

So yes, a hand held lens is permissible, but a hand help microscope? Why do you think you need it?
