Churchill exacts its revenge for not being on your rankings. :P

At this point I mostly rank around all of your opinions. If people aren't talking about a team, they don't have as good of a chance of being highly ranked. Of course, a lot of it has to do with a team's success and reputation. Many factors go into these my young son.

Paul J. Gelinas won New York, but we're pretty evenly matched with Eagle Hill. We beat them twice this season, but it was by one point at Rustin and about thirty at states. We've always been very close in scores, so it's hard to say who should be on the rankings and who shouldn't.

Strath Haven and Shady Side are also very close. I've gone against Strath, but I've never personally competed against Shady. It'll be interesting how PA will turn out.

I think Rustin would be a good score sheet to look at. Lots of teams that have been mentioned competed there, so the scores reflected the teams' ability against each other at the very beginning of the season.

Well, personally, although I don't know enough to make my own rankings (although that would be an interesting thing for me to do in my spare time), I don't think they should be made in the first place, because they most likely won't even be close (besides Solon winning xD). Remember, these are just kids you're talking about. With that being said, we aren't dealing with professionals with many years in the fields of science. The rate at which certain kids improve at their events fluctuates based on the kid, event, and time period. But whatever the circumstance, these kids work really hard, and can greatly improve within a time period of just a month. That's the difference between a national competition and a state competition. Also, basing results on past (2012, 2011) competitions isn't fair because there are new kids on the teams every year.

tl;dr: You can't rate teams of kids based on previous competitions because they can change so much in a small amount of time. If that's the only way rankings can be made, than... What's the point?

I don't mean to attack anyone; this is just my point of view. I don't think ranking teams is completely inane... I just don't see the point, and it doesn't make sense to me either.

It's just fun to speculate/possibly do some sort of "March Madness" -esque tournament for nationals. :P

For people who weren't around during nationals last year, there will be:
  • A prediction contest in which you predict the top several overall finishers for each division; and
  • FantaSO (Fantasy Science Olympiad), in which you predict which team will win each event, and then the placings of your chosen teams are added up similar to a real Science Olympiad tournament, and the winner will be the person with the lowest total score.
Links for these two prediction competitions will be up sometime in May after all nationals teams have been determined.
