Trial events count towards score at our regionals, E.L.I.

Same in WNY (Lake Erie/Niagara). Although you only have to compete in 18 of 25 events, so you can choose not to do the trials. But if you do them, they count.

In CNY you compete in every event, but the trials don't count towards the total score, and the two lowest scores are dropped, then the teams are ranked.

I'm from Western Long Island . . .

Trials count toward our overall place. This year we have to compete in all 20 events that were chosen to run at the regionals, based on a vote of the coaches of each team. All 20 events count toward your score. Should make things very interesting in Western Long Island with 62 teams. Speaking of which, 62 teams? That has to be one of the largest regionals in the United States. I mean, its the largest in NY.

Bleh, a seeding round for Sumo Bots on the Friday before states would be nice, but I guess it won't happen this year.

As for the sharp, low scoop thing... well, my bot got beaten by a metal box that didn't even come down to the floor. Their bot used a Tamiya gearbox, so it wasn't all that strong anyways. The only trouble for me was that they had double-sided foam sticky tape on their tracks, so I couldn't push them at all. I would have made finals if it weren't for that. I mean, it's perfectly fair to me that a team could slap a quick-and-dirty robot together with some ingenuity to beat a sumo bot that somebody spent a lot of time on, but it sure does suck to be the loser.

I do agree that Sumo Bots is really freaking expensive compared to other events. If you're a good builder, you can skimp on the motors, batteries, and such and still be competitive, but you can't skimp if your team doesn't have the bare minimum—a RC set with crystals and a motor controller. Though with the new rules on radios, an enterprising electronics engineer might be able to build his own set.

NY Metro runs 24 events (no Egg-O-Naut) and requires teams to choose four events to not score. Trial events are considered equivalent to other events. I think that's alright. I mean, Sumo Bots should be worth at least as much as something like Picture This, which is really not a real event to me. :\

Hmm, got back from the NY Metro (the NYC region) regionals. Don't remember all the results, except for the ones pertinent to my team:
1. Townsend Harris Team A
2. Stuyvesant Team B
3. Stuyvesant Team C
...
9. Stuyvesant Team A

I got first in EV, third in Sumo Bots, and I'm going to states, so I'm satisfied with the results, but not ecstatic. Interesting thing about Sumo Bots is that I beat the 2nd place team, but had the same win/loss record and was in a lower bracket, and was ranked lower. I also beat the first-place Sumo Bot twice before I was eliminated. Finally, the robot was a backup design from two years ago that I built in a single night, so I never even expected it to do well. Overall, it was nice for me, not so great for my team.
