what are some recommendations for field guides? soinc.org recommend the Smithsonian ones, but i'm not sure. or making one yourself. this is like in rocks and minerals where you get to take a field guide right?

Almost all competitive teams will use a binder. I would highly reccomend that you make it, and make it well.

Yeah, its a better idea to make your own field guide, because you learn a lot more when making it. Also, everything is set up to your preference.

Just be prepared to devote a lot of time to that binder. A truly fabulous binder will take countless hours to create.

Yeah, our old binder isn't too good, the person was good, just not the binder.

I think the test writers get a bulk of their information from the Audobon guide, but im not 100% sure. ALso, if youre gonna bring both, its better to use your binder for identification, and then have the page number for the field guide so you can jump to it quickly to find some information.

Or you could maul a field guide and put it in to your binder to save even more time. Also I know at least in my state the test writer always got ALL of his questions from the audubon.
