Yeah, and make state "state or country" and internationalize scioly.org... but what about translation issues?

I don't think Japan will have enough students to start a Science Olympiad. Also, Japan's so small, a National competition would be pointless.

Oh dear. I don't even want to think about passport, visa, translation, airline security (for build it events, we're bringing in potentially hazardous items), and actual trying to read other languages (remember, foreign countries mean signs and directions in foreign languages). *shiver*

Yeah. Online translators FAIL. They warp everything to a different meaning.

In terms of Japan pwning SO, I think it would be a several years after they initially join before they start owning hard.

And in general, I think it's a great idea. SO was meant to help education in general. Either way, I think that translating is problematic, however. In my opinion, that just can create a significant advantage or disadvantage for the Japanese teams, simply because languages are limited. While some may consider this to be outrage, I think the only way we can allow Japanese teams to compete is if they take the test in english. There's just simply too much controversy with translation and such.

As a member of SO who's experienced many sorts of different competitions, I personally think it would be nice to see all this competition from Japan. It's great to spread SO. Bring it on, Japan :D

Anyways, whatever happens, Japan is still in the early stages of developing this program, regardless.

Should we have scioly internationalized, with state/country instead of state?

Cheesy Pie, I'm sure it has the opportunity to someday. If it is, the fairest way to do it is to standardize it (with a common language or w/e). Just imagine going to internationals, though. THAT would be epic. Right now, the current system is working well, so I wonder if Mr. Putz would ever bother messing with it.
