Though if you gneiss from the surface and then start applying heat and pressure, I'm pretty sure it'll go through the cycle again just like any other rock, starting with slate. I'm not 100% sure about that though (I haven't taken Petrology yet)

Re: Preliminary: Rocks and Minerals
I thought I heard from somewhere there is now a new scale is use that replaced the moh's scale for measuring hardness, anybody know if this is true and if so, what its calledJim_R wrote:Preliminary discussion for Rocks&Minerals.
I've been looking through old tests now, and it looks like the event is all about the Identification part. If you can ID it, you will do great, since almost every question is easily located online, and the few things besides IDing (Bowen reaction series, aging rocks, Mohs scale, rock cycle, etc.) aren't too difficult.

Re: Preliminary: Rocks and Minerals
Will there be a list of rock and mineral types that we could be possibly asked about or asked to identify? (Like how there was the list of species for ornithology.)

Yeah, take a look at the trial rules. I can guarantee that our list will be at least 95% similar to it.Celeste wrote:Will there be a list of rock and mineral types that we could be possibly asked about or asked to identify? (Like how there was the list of species for ornithology.)

Re: Preliminary: Rocks and Minerals
R&M wasn't a trial event this year in NY, but I think this is an ID event with the list and field guides, etc.

Re: Preliminary: Rocks and Minerals
It is exactly that
R&M is a lot like fossils, there is going to be A LOT Of ID, but its also going to involve general info.
Would using the old list be helpful?

Yes - The new list will probably be about ~90% the same._anatomy_ wrote:It is exactly that

Re: Preliminary: Rocks and Minerals
I found the trial event rules here: http://bohr.eri.harvard.edu/bobg/RocksAndMinerals.pdf
This looks like a good event to do next year. I studied Rocks and Minerals in 4th grade.
