Erm, wouldn't having four axes make the situation worse?

Well having the 4th axis might allow them to orient themselves better so they know which way it is facing.

Four axes in three dimensional space doesn't even make sense...the direction it faces will be probably the origin which is yourself...right? Whatever you define.

Quite frankly me and partner just start in one place build from there. BTW what would be the reason if the building part of it got 4 points off?
I got 2nd place in WIDI Kansas state competition in 2010-2011!

If anyone has ever done this event before I need help. Are the things we write about complex? What kind of things are the objects made out of?

In WIDI, anything goes. They can even hand you a hand-drawn picture and ask you to replicate it. Or a bunch of stickers on a piece of paper.
You have your basic building materials, but it's usually not just one or two things.

Before anything, get the basic structure down. At least for the past two invites, that's how my partner and I have scored so well. The main idea came first, the details came second. Of course, don't ignore the details.

Anything and everything. WIDI is a crapshoot.

First, check the Write It Do It Wiki

Generally, you will be given a set of toy construction materials, i.e. K'nex, Legos, Googleplex, and what is constructed will be fairly complex- it will NOT be symmetrical by any means.

My regionals consistently used styrofoam balls, pipe cleaners, clothespins, and beads. Not horrible. But still, we didn't win any medals. 8th place. I'm a WI/DI veteran I guess (2 years) but I'm tired of it now. Next year, it's time to move on for me.

Strategies. . . hmm. . . my past partners and I never had a strategy (well, this year our strategy was to practice but that was it!). Even the year I medaled my partner and I didn't practice once. So I guess I'm not of much help. A lot of it is luck. But practice with many different building materials can never hurt.
