Re: Helicopter B/C [Trial]
I haven't seen any tournaments yet this year, but higher times are certainly possible!
Under last years rules with a 5.0 gm minimum and 30 cm max rotors the Ohio State trial saw times in the minute range. At Michigan I timed copters like the Wright Bat fly more than 20 seconds (not a real good design, but it will do better than you've seen) and twin rotor designs approaching 1 minute.
With this years 4.0 gm minimum and 40 cm rotors 1 minute 30 seconds should be doable. Probably more.
BUT, you have to get the weight down!!! A 14 gm Wright Bat just won't fly very long on 1.5 gm of rubber. There is NO substitute for lightness.
If your not sure how to build to weight, check out the Wright Stuff threads, much info on how to build to an intended weight over there. Check out the string called Flight TImes.

Re: Helicopter B/C [Trial]
Building question
If you look in a Gillow's balsa airplane they use a dual purpose red plastic piece to work as a sleeve bearing and to mount the prop to the body of the plane. In the Helicopter Duration event the use of a plastic sleeve bearing is clearly allowed. Would I be allowed to use this piece to attach the helicopter blade to the stick body (ceiling walker style)?
The use of plastic as a connector seems to be indicated but I am not sure if this much of a pre-assembled plastic piece would be allowed.
Thanks,

Mine have been like between 20 and 30 seconds... i'm not quite sure how if this is good enough to do well in states.
It better not replace egg-o-naut!!MagicGuy wrote:Hey guys, I heard Helicopter was going to replace Egg-o- Naut as a Division C Building Event next year? and what do you think next year's trial events are going to be?

Re: Helicopter B/C [Trial]
How did you make your rotors? I used the exact same design at our districsharryk wrote:well I don't know where people are getting 30 second and higher times
I designed mine after the Wright Bat Flyer
It weighed 14 grams and got second place at district with 2.3 sec first was 3 point something
however there was a team who had a little copter (small enough to fit in your palm)![]()
and they were testing it before competition and were flying 10+ seconds
but then they broke it in their hand

I bought a solid piece of basla 12''x1''x1'' and carved out the rotor, surprisingly it only took about an hour and a halfget wrecked wrote:How did you make your rotors? I used the exact same design at our districsharryk wrote:well I don't know where people are getting 30 second and higher times
