our test was very similar to yours. it was much more varied than i thought, the only thing they didnt ask about at all was eggs, which i was really surprised about. we also had the thing about the feet, but it was just what they were called. at regionals though, we did have to match feet to what they did for some stations.

googlyfrog, we couldnt have screwed up too badly at that station, otherwise we wouldnt have gotten first. but yeah, thats definitely something we need to look at for nationals. the topic's so broad though its hard to know where to start. I think the order of the bird calls were belted kingfisher, great horned owl, western meadowlark, northern bobwhite, and bald eagle.

oh right, belted kingfisher. no, i remember that northern bobwhite was second. so the order was "belted kingfisher, northern bobwhite, western meadowlark, great horned owl, and bald eagle". if we got all those right, of course, which we probably didnt.

I think we got at least 4/5, I'm still not sure about the Western Meadowlark. I mean, it SOUNDED like it, but it didn't sound EXACTLY like it. Bleh, why don't they give us our tests back!?

yeah, its super annoying how some events know exactly what they got like the building events, and then for study events all you know is your placing, not even your raw score or what you got wrong. its funny how we're the only two people posting right now when we could actually just talk in person.

In my opinion, I think that they should just post the test questions/answer key online, and maybe a pic of the station if there werent printed pictures. It's just nervewracking knowing you go something wrong and not knowing what it is.

does anyone know what kind of info i should look up for nationals? even though i got first at states, i felt like theres still a lot of stuff i didnt know. anyone have any good links for me? thanks

If you're already using the National List, nothing. Of course, the questions will be harder, but everything said in the manual applies to both states and nationals. The only thing I can think of is the fact that they're allowing two field guides per team for nationals.

i think the extra field guide is going to be very helpful, although the one problem i can see coming is things getting too messy, especially if its in stations. everything's so hurried, and theres always a chance you'll leave something behind, especially with the two pages national bird list and the one sheet of notes. i remember at states i left my pencil behind and never got it back, just because we had to move around in stations so quickly that it was hard to keep track of everything that you brought. thank god my partner had her pencils with her the whole time. at least i didnt leave anything important behind.

Did your pencil have a large eraser?

Also, anyone who is in ornithology is invited to help complete the list of birds on the wiki! It'll probably be organized in many tables by order (or, in the case of passeriformes, by family). Each bird has its order on the national list (for sorting the table), common name, genus and species, a photo, and comments on identification. Most photographs from WIkipedia are free use/public domain, or you can use your own. Please, help out!
