I'm not really sure. There's difference in crystal shape, a epidote is a bit softer than tourmaline.

Ooh yay. I've been operating under the assumption that epidote occurs in clusters, while tourmaline is usually a single crystal. That's what I've observed, though i'm not sure if that rule is 'set in stone.' Haha
