Whoops, PA has 310 teams. That's still a lot less than NY.

Our regionals has only about 32 teams. Top five go to states. At states, top two go to nationals, but we all already know that. (Right?) If we got third at states, our coaches would get a heart attack from sheer joy at having done so well.

You should be aware that those numbers include both B and C. I think the figure for C teams in NYS was about 335 or so last year, which is still the biggest by a healthy margin. I heard that most states have more B teams, but if PA is like NY and has more C teams, your 200 guess may be about right for C teams.

Hmm...interesting. Did not realize that.

I know NY definitely has more C teams.

Our regional competition in C division has 35+. So it's still a lot.

You are in NYC, right? That's the third biggest. W.L.I. is up to sixty, and E.L.I. is at 42 so far. The other eight regions are a lot smaller.

I just remembered that one year, the designated Astronomy proctor failed to show us, and because of that, Fleetwood beat us.

Nope, Lake Erie/Niagara. We have at least 35 registered for this year.

How many do those bigger regions send to states?

I had no idea that Erie/Niagara was that big.

The basic rule for determining how many teams get sent (as I understand it) is 1 + 1/ten teams, + 1 bonus if the winner is a perennial. I don't remember the rule for that - I think it is if the winner came in first or second for the last two years, or something like that. Anyway, E.L.I. usually sends 6, NYC usually sends five, and W.L.I. sends 7 or 8.

That sounds right. We used to have less than 30 and three would go. But one year there was a team that had made it 3 or 4 years and they sent 4.

Which means this year they may send 5 as one team has won at least for the past two years. I can only hope (we have a long history of placing 5th).

Last year we had 32 and they sent 4. This year we're at 35 last I heard but it could be more.

We are a big region, both in population and geographically. Encompasses all of Buffalo and its suburbs, from parts of the southtowns and southern tier up to Niagara Falls. That's a lot of schools. And more seem to be joining every year.
