I'm a big fan of Solzhenitsyn, especially One Day In the Life of Ivan Denisovich. The Plague (Camus) was also really great.
As far as non-fiction, Europe by Norman Davies is by far the best thing I have ever read.

Here are my favorites:
Timeline 191 series - Harry Turtledove (alternate history)
1632 series - Eric Flint (alternate history)
Academy series - Jack Mcdevitt (sci-fi)
Roots:The Saga of An American Family - Alex Haley
America in the King Years trilogy - Taylor Branch

The Eight is just a bad rip-off of Umberto Eco's Foucault's Pendulum.
I just found The Eight on a table in a rummage sale, and thought it looked good. I'll keep this other one in mind, though.
The Gods Themselves is definitely considered a novel, though in truth it's almost like three short stories put together in one book. They are all about the same thing, but... I'm not explaining it well. It's good, fits together well, and makes you think. Excellent Sci-Fi, in my opinion.

I understand, Asimov writes like that a lot, like the first Foundation book.

I also really enjoyed Ella Enchanted. The movie was totally different, but i thought it was alright. I just wish they gave it a different title because it was almost in no way related to the book (besides the whole obedience thing.)
