As far as sponges go, they might just give you a piece. Many spongre fossils are just on the surface of a rock. Also they would probably give you a full or nearly full fossil for things such as brachiopods and trilobites, I mean you might only see one side, but that is about it. However I don't know if they would, but they could give you curled trilobite fossils which are pretty common, which is basically the trilobite rolled up into a wide wheel like a pill bug but less round.

some of the samples may not be that good. Ive seen trilobite samples that are basically small parts of it. But its usually a distinct part, like the top part of cryptolithus. Also, several times ive gotten a station where you get a hunk of limestone and you need to find as many different fossils as you can in it, and often there are fragments.

I mean a lot of this stuff is just at the supervisors discretion. I mean if a supervisor is feeling nice, maybe they will give you all of their best, clearest specimens. However lets say the supervisor is feeling a bit evil, well then they have every right to give you very hard specimens.

Essentially, what you have to know for this event is as follows:
ID (major part)
environment the organism may have lived in
geologic time
geologic sequencing (like, you get a cross-section of the ground, and you need to put the events in order).
mode of life (pelagic, benthic, sessile, etc)
behavior (what the organism ate, etc.)
basic anatomy of major groups (most likely, you dont need to know the anatomy of every genus)
