We seem to do fine with Legos, but knex are a hit or miss. (It was a hit at regionals

)

Well how do you describe legos in the directions?

My writer describes it with color and number of dots, and using coordinates on the bases for placing things. Then we always use the long side to describe which way it's pointing.

Oh ok that's smart:P I usually described legos with the number of holes under it...but that turned into a mess

Haha the weirdest thing: my writer is BETTER at describing random things, like found at nationals, than in describing structures IMO

Hmmm. I always thought of Legos being easier than most things.
If we're on a baseplate and the Lego goes on the baseplate, then we describe how many pegs from the closest corner the block starts on and its orientation (N-S or E-W) and assume it's nubs up (and describe if it's upside down or whatever).
if we're not on a baseplate, just start with the easiest block to start with.
Blocks that go on the lower level are simply described in relationship to the block their on.
Legos are a lot easier than loops with pipe cleaners, where to put toothpicks in balls, etc.

At regionals this year they gave me a paper plate to stick toothpicks In, and beads and Gummi bears to stick on the toothpicks. Not Legos, pretty random. But my partner and I still got 2nd!

At regionals ours was quite easy! It was just K'nexs and a pipe cleaner, we only got third though. But, our write it/do it at the Comet invitational was quite a bit more challenging. We did horrible there and got tenth!!

I'm hoping that states will be just a step up from regionals.
