My partner did the same thing. It would be neigh impossible to... im not sure what the word is.. Do the thing where its possible to bow because the strings are in a curve rather than a line. In any case, she is a great cellist and we made here a guicello (hold it like a cello, play it like a guitar).nomynameisnotkevin wrote:I had a stringed instrument last year, but I ended up just plucking...

Re: Sounds of Music B
We just went to our first invitational and one of our better instruments could not be read by the iphone app tuner they used. I reread Prof. Hoekje's explanation that a spectrum analyzer works better for more instruments to meaure this. So why are we using tuners instead of spectrum analyzers to measure at competition (rules say electronic tuner)? I suspect it has to do with training folks to use them correctly. I've just put in a clarification asking that the suggested acceptable tuner apps be listed to give these kids a heads up in the development stage. They were using an electronic tuner during building, but apparently it was more able to measure than the iphone (weak mic?) was able to do. It seems that this is a known problem with this event, though a search on this forum didn't pop anything up. I think it would be nice to make that very clear to folks getting started in this event so that they know what to watch for from the get go. Even better, why not use the tool that can do the job. It looks like there are a number of spectrum analyzers available as apps too. Thanks!

Re: Sounds of Music B
Something I wanted to point out:
When I was at the Rustin Invitational in Pennsylvania, I saw a lot of teams with flutes. And I mean, a lot of teams, not just one or two. If you are doing something last minute, and you have a person who can play flute, sure, go for it. But making something a little more complicated and time consuming may go to your advantage when you have a) better tone or b) a better range or c) a more reliable instrument. I know I mentioned making my own flute earlier in this thread, but I ended up not taking it to competition. It was too variable, and I realized that a lot of people would make something similar.

Phthalates, the plastic softener used in soft vinyl products, are not found in water pipes, which are made from rigid, "unplasticized" PVCknittingfrenzy18 wrote:Alright guys...imma make a woodwind instrument. Not telling what.
Anyways I wanna use PVC pipe but my mom says it's toxic, and she doesn't want me putting my mouth on it. I think it only is toxic when warmed up and giving off fumes, right? What do I tell her so that I can use this material...

Here's another way to try to convince her.. go to a home improvement store and look in the plumbing aisle. See all that PVC pipe? Much of it is designed / used for carrying water to various taps / faucets in your house (ignore the septic stuff obviously). If it's safe enough for the water in your house to be sitting in for hours on end and then you drinking it, it's safe enough for you to put your mouth on for a couple minutes.

Re: Sounds of Music B
I know that being in Div C, I can't participate in this event, but out of curiosity has anyone seen a homemade Tuba?
