Maybe you should split up the list with your partner. My tree list doesn't have many families because the pine family has a lot of trees. In total there are only 6 families. And, I meant to say that to someone who lived in the same state as I do. Generally speaking, tree lists from the same state are nearly the same.caseyotis wrote:On my New York list, there are about 30 families, some with very similar characteristics. It's learnable, but requires dedication.jma wrote:Yup. But it should be quite easy to learn family characteristics because there are only a few families. And, you should try out different tecniques to see which work best for you.

Well, I don't know about you, but where I live the test is based on the Audobon guide, so most of the info I need is found there.SimplyNeedLogic wrote:I feel like Sibley's and Audubon books are the most popular guides to bring to competition, is there a reason why? Or is it just personal preference? I like NWF because the book's organized by leaf types (simple leaves, etc.( so it's easier to ID.

Personally, I prefer field guides with real images of the leaves and bark. Although the pictures are detailed I think pictures of real specimens will be better since the event usually tests with actual pictures/samples of the trees rather than drawings.Unuriel wrote:Many tests are based on Audubon, and Sibley has very detailed pictures and descriptions.

Re: Forestry B/C
I agree. I personally like how the Audubon Guide is organized; not by families, but by leaf shape, which can be very important if you don't know the families. I'm getting both the NWF and the Audubon this year, because on my state list, it clearly says that the information will be based on those two guides. Just saying.hotchocolate123 wrote:Personally, I prefer field guides with real images of the leaves and bark. Re: Forestry B/C
I don't believe so; you can check their website, though. Does it mention anything about using a regional or national list on your guideline?SimplyNeedLogic wrote:Does anyone know if California (well, NorCal) has a state list?
I don't understand why you are laying the blame on me, when it says on my event sheet that those books would be useful. Why would I not take advantage of that? -.-TheBookworm wrote:But then that completely defeats the purpose of the event.caseyotis wrote:I agree. Oh, I'm so sorry. I didn't mean to lay the blame on you, I'm just, ah, voicing my objection towards the judges in your region. That sounds just about right.caseyotis wrote:I don't understand why you are laying the blame on me, when it says on my event sheet that those books would be useful. Quite frankly, you would be an idiot not to take advantage of that. I'm sorry, really I am. me being embarrased-->>

It's not only my region; this is the state list we're talking about.
It says:
blah blah blah. The two major resources I will be using are:
So, I just though "Hey, we can bring two books, why not those two?" You know what I mean? I think they are the best books anyways, so I hope they do me well.
