Does anyone know where to find statistics on whether tutors, books and all that actually help and by how much?

I'm with rocketman though... I got a 2200 without ever touching a prep book or a tutor or anything.

The ACT is way better anyway though. I definitely preferred that day.

In 7th grade, I got a 710 on the math, 700 on reading and 660 on writing... for 2070 total. This was with minimal preparation; I think I did one practice test.

OOHHHH.
I recently took the SAT to go to CTY.
My results came back; in total, I got a 1650.
:D
Two of my friends are like, geniuses. One of them for 2000 and the other got 2010. They go to SciO at a different school.
And we're not even in high school yet xD

1650 even after you took CTY courses?!??! Wow...I would expect better after spending more than a thousand dollars for a SAT summer camp! (It's not your fault...you should sue CTY for not teaching you properly! :D )

GRACIE! *glompify*

Yeah, I'm the "genius" who made a 2010 in seventh grade, but I think my ego deflated after seeing everyone else's scores. :( Gracie and I are both going to CTY LAN this year, if anyone else here is.

Math: 670 (don't laugh >_<)
Reading: 710
Writing: 630 (yay, 6 on the essay FAIL)

Well, the SAT has no real practical use for anyone in middle school, so I wouldn't worry over scores. I looked over a few prep books (Princeton Review and an official one, I think) and they didn't strike me as particularly helpful. Most of the time the so-called "advice" was just stating the obvious; don't spend too much time on one question, look for key words in fill-in-the-blank sentence completions, and so forth. I never did understand the "Joe Bloggs" method that the Princeton books had to help with hard math questions either. Oftentimes the obvious answer was the correct one.

Also, for anyone looking to buy the Kaplan review CDs, it's a waste of money. One of the teachers at my middle school gave me the prep CDs, and I just found the whole thing to be poorly executed. The "help" video was laughable and looked to be built for an elementary audience.

The last thing is that I don't understand why everyone always goes on about SAT prep books and hiring tutors when there's always the (much more efficient) option of actually learning the material. :P

It's not the review section of the books as much as it is the questions.

The material on the tests isn't hard - it's the way the questions are asked that are.
