Out of the five trees I've studied, that just happened to be one of them. ;)

That was fast! The answer to the bonus is because of a fungal blight that spread along the east coast in the early 1900s. The shoots are resistant to the blight so they're still pretty common today, but the blight kills most before they have a chance to produce seeds.

EDIT: Wait, never mind. I think it's the Black Cherry, and the answer to the question would be Tent Caterpillar and black knot disease.
