rip who's been monitoring the quality New Jersey states?

No, the tournament would take place at its usual date but bids would have to be announced after all state competitions (or when every team ahead of a team that lost states won states, if that makes any sense)
Well one benefit of having these be post-state competitions is that they hold more prestige and give teams more time to prepare. But maybe it would be best to keep them at their current dates because of potential logistics issues.

Churchill and Kennedy from NorCal have both won Ohio tournaments this year. Only one of them will get to go win Nationals.

The current system is broken for the most competitive states.

There are a lot of interesting ideas in this thread and I'm glad there's interest in exploring this.

I think one thing important to point out, that may be getting lost a bit, is that the current purpose of nationals is not to have the best teams in the country. The current purpose of nationals is to have the best teams from each state. Any system in which some states do not have any teams at nationals will require a greater philosophical shift in Science Olympiad as an organization into what the purpose of nationals is.

I mean where would D.C. go instead? Virginia? Maryland? I'm not too sure...

It is my personal opinion that DC should compete in Maryland. It does not add to geographic diversity the same way that teams from Wyoming or Alaska do.

D.C. being added as a separate state also ended up taking a Texas bid away, which I'd argue is a bad thing.
