Personally I think that this year NY B wasn't actually as competitive as last year. Yes, there were more schools trying to get 2nd, but the scores were way farther apart (besides the score between 3rd and 4th) and it felt like not every top 5 school actually placed consistently. Also, if we're comparing this to last year, in 2018 Gelinas and Bay Academy had 3 gold medals, Murphy had 4, Goff/Eagle Hill had 2. This year, Gelinas had 10, Murphy and Bay Academy had 2, Goff had none, and Eagle Hill had 5. Clearly, Gelinas and Eagle Hill dominated the competition far more in 2019 and for that reason I don't think it was as competitive as everyone is making it out to be.
If you put it that way I guess. Also, what happened with roller coaster? I heard there was a scoring mistake or something.
kate!: Having a lot of gold medals doesn't necessarily equate to success. As you said before (I think so?) consistency is key - Ladue got 14 golds at state last year but still lost because of 2 20ish events.

Agreed, the key thing was that we (Gelinas) didn't bomb anything (besides roller which was presumably scored wrong), getting top 5 for all the events besides 3 of them (roller, crime, expd) which equated to half of our total score. A lot of the teams this year were decent, still competitive but bombed a few events which dragged them behind.

Yeah, I understand that consistency is the most important thing, I was just using the amount of gold medals as an example of how the top 5 this year and last year maintained that consistency (mainly Gelinas). Like wzhang said, it was mostly the bombs/low placements that affected team scores.

That sounds about right. Consistency is key. It cost Solon the win at Cornell. It's also why Bedford went to Nats last year. Lyme Old Lyme bombed WIDI and Potions, getting 10th in both, and we(Bedford) only beat them by 10 points. States this year would've also been a lot closer if LOL didn't bomb a couple events. So yeah, consistency definitely wins tournaments.

then look at nats rankings
toughest would therefore be:
new jersey, norcal, socal, virginia, hawaii, etc (states with 2 bids would be as tough as their second bid to get to nats)
