kate!: Having a lot of gold medals doesn't necessarily equate to success. As you said before (I think so?) consistency is key - Ladue got 14 golds at state last year but still lost because of 2 20ish events.TheCrazyChemist wrote:If you put it that way I guess. Also, what happened with roller coaster? I heard there was a scoring mistake or something.kate! wrote:Personally I think that this year NY B wasn't actually as competitive as last year. Yes, there were more schools trying to get 2nd, but the scores were way farther apart (besides the score between 3rd and 4th) and it felt like not every top 5 school actually placed consistently. Also, if we're comparing this to last year, in 2018 Gelinas and Bay Academy had 3 gold medals, Murphy had 4, Goff/Eagle Hill had 2. This year, Gelinas had 10, Murphy and Bay Academy had 2, Goff had none, and Eagle Hill had 5. Clearly, Gelinas and Eagle Hill dominated the competition far more in 2019 and for that reason I don't think it was as competitive as everyone is making it out to be.TheCrazyChemist wrote: NY states was a battle for second. I'm thinking that PA states will be the same. I completely forgot about NorCal since I don't really know much about any teams I don't compete with, but that's that. What state do you think is the most competitive besides NorCal and SoCal for first place?

Agreed, the key thing was that we (Gelinas) didn't bomb anything (besides roller which was presumably scored wrong), getting top 5 for all the events besides 3 of them (roller, crime, expd) which equated to half of our total score. A lot of the teams this year were decent, still competitive but bombed a few events which dragged them behind.dxu46 wrote:kate!: Having a lot of gold medals doesn't necessarily equate to success. It's impossible to have this discussion without defining what "competitive" means. If it means the closest competition, that can mean something very different than the toughest competition.19alekb wrote:what are the top 3 most competitive states?

Yeah, I understand that consistency is the most important thing, I was just using the amount of gold medals as an example of how the top 5 this year and last year maintained that consistency (mainly Gelinas). Like wzhang said, it was mostly the bombs/low placements that affected team scores.wzhang5460 wrote:Agreed, the key thing was that we (Gelinas) didn't bomb anything (besides roller which was presumably scored wrong), getting top 5 for all the events besides 3 of them (roller, crime, expd) which equated to half of our total score. That sounds about right. Consistency is key. It cost Solon the win at Cornell. It's also why Bedford went to Nats last year. Lyme Old Lyme bombed WIDI and Potions, getting 10th in both, and we(Bedford) only beat them by 10 points. States this year would've also been a lot closer if LOL didn't bomb a couple events. So yeah, consistency definitely wins tournaments.kate! wrote:Yeah, I understand that consistency is the most important thing, I was just using the amount of gold medals as an example of how the top 5 this year and last year maintained that consistency (mainly Gelinas). then look at nats rankingsTheCrazyChemist wrote:Yeah. Let's define it as toughest.EastStroudsburg13 wrote:It's impossible to have this discussion without defining what "competitive" means. toughest would therefore be:
new jersey, norcal, socal, virginia, hawaii, etc (states with 2 bids would be as tough as their second bid to get to nats)

Gallagher and Walpole are obviously tougher than all of your schools combined.

If the closest competition is a thing might as well throw in MOPirateShip wrote:What about closet competition then?EastStroudsburg13 wrote:It's impossible to have this discussion without defining what "competitive" means.
