I think I figured out UTM, all you have to do is check the bottem left hand cornor of the quad for that short paragraph about revisions and other stuff. It should be withen the paragraph (I'm working on getting a pic, will get one up ASAP)

Maybe, but if you're right, why would something so simple only be allowed on states and nationals tests?

I agree with eyeball. If that's all you need to know why would it only be on states and nationals? Wasn't there something about reading UTM maps or something? (if I had the rules handy I would figure it out, but I don't)

Sorry for the double post, but I just got my hands on a rules sheet. The UTM is in the "Topographic Map" section, so cooltiger may be right. However, I think it's not just being able to read the paragraph, you also need to interpret the parts of it on the map; there are blue tick marks around the border every kilometer. Perhaps you need to be able to interpret these? I'll look into this subject a bit more.

dose anyone know how to program a calculator to work in degrees, minutes, and seconds instead of decimals?

Well, the calculators must be non-programmable, and the majority of that type don't function in degrees, minutes, and seconds. I'm working with my TI-30X and TI-34II to try to figure it out. I'm pretty sure you can convert degrees back into decimal on those calculators by typing it in that way, but I'm not sure how to do it in reverse.
