Re: Battery Buggy B

Re: Battery Buggy B
it depends on how you are building.
wood is more versatile but takes longer to build. and is heavier and is generally sturdier with less maintenance after builiding
Medal is faster to build when you use a kit and lighter

Re: Battery Buggy B
For Scrambler C in '06, which has similar chassis requirements, I used bass wood. Next to balsa, it is about the lightest wood you can find easily. I used 1/4" thick pieces, which gave me a pretty rigid box.jaydinwars wrote:So what type of wood or Metal is good for this event???
If you need a beefier chassis, I'd just step up to poplar/maple/oak or something. The difference in weights between them shouldn't matter much in Buggy.
As far as metal goes, availability will really limit you to: kits, steel, or aluminum. Unless you have have more metalworking resources than I did, steel is probably a poor choice just because your average drill bit won't much appreciate it. You can drill aluminum handily with normal drill bits, as long as you go slowly. Aluminum would be strong enough for anything you needed to do anyway.
If you are trying do decide between wood and metal...kits aside, which can you fashion better? In terms of rigidity, metal is obviously capable of beating wood, but it depends on what you are using to hold the pieces together. If you have the resources to work with metal, it is probably better. If you don't, wood works well enough for the other 98% of competitors. Woodglue, screws, and something with a good right angle will be better than a shoddy metal frame.
