I did Thermodynamics last year and I found that a 3-d printed box was legal and worked very well.

what did you do with the 3-d printing technology that made it better than any other box?

Nothing.

Did you also try a 3D-printed box or is this more of a hypothesis

I kinda see how it would help but then it wouldn't really help because plastic isn't the best insulator, and if you're just printing the exterior box you might as well use acrylic sheets or wood

I didn't, but a thermo box is successful because of its insulating ability; 3D printing has nothing to do with that.

3D printing is a really bad idea for a thermo device; the filament (is that the correct term for it? I've been away from 3D printing for quite some time) needed would cost the same as actually buying insulation foam and cutting it into the correct shape. The thermal insulation will probably be realllly bad, and unless you have a good 3D printer and experience, you're likely to run into a great many mishaps while trying to print it.

At least its only an invitational. Sometimes it takes a hard lesson to really learn. And you should be happy you got third.

But the feeling of a chance of getting first place if I just did something simple as slip on googles makes me angry But its ok

I'm kind of surprised they let you do the build portion without goggles... (I know the build portion isn't at all dangerous, but rules are rules)
I feel like they would just disquallify you from the build portion at Regionals/States if you didn't bring goggles, and you couldn't find any.

I did bring my glasses but in the heat of the moment I forgot to put them on

I used a 3-d printed box with walls 5mm thick and it made air pockets that trapped in heat. This also makes it so you know the exact dimensions of the box.

My local library has a 3-d printer that you can print for 10 cents a ounce and my box only cost $8 and only lost 10 degrees with a hole over the top of the beaker. It will work. Sorry I have not been on for a while. If you do not have a local 3-d printer that will pay for the filiment this is not a good idea.
