It's my first time doing this event.
Can anyone just uhm, explain what's it's like, what really happens, and such pretty please.

Uh... I know someone helped ya but I'll just put it here for the sake of knowing!
All right, You basically get a packet that is filled with info from the crime, the crime itself, shoe prints, finger prints, and maybe DNA samples. Most parts are just matching the evidence with the info from the suspect, (like matching a shoe print from the crime with shoes worn from suspects. Hair can be used as well.) another part is when you find unknown materials and you have to find the name of the unknowns of course. This is not all the things you have to do, but to make a long story short, you end up writing a small essay on who did the crime!
Ja ne!

just by reading the posts I can tell that everyone that almost everyone loves it. I love it too. Last year was my first year and I was very suprised to get first place. Really most of the information you need to know is the chemicals

At my Regionals, there were some mixtures with the powder unknowns, as expected- but they didn't tell us which ones were mixtures (I'm almost 100% certain it says in the rules that they're supposed to tell you that...) and so I didn't realize that one of them was sugar and salt... I put just sugar >.<
Also, they collected our notes sheets after the event, with no intention of returning them... has anyone else had them collected? I'm pretty annoyed by the prospect of having to rewrite it all for States, even though I barely looked at it and didn't need it that much... I'm still going to have to redo the whole thing with all that info, just in case (the only powders at our regionals were sugar, salt, flour, corn starch, baking soda, and alka seltzer. Of course I didn't need my notes sheet. If there were more difficult things to identify, I might rely on it a little more lol).

They are supposed to tell you which ones are mixtures. As far as collecting the notes sheets, they did that at our states and i think they are actually supposed to, so they were right about that (i think).
