That reminds me...My dad got a picture and I saw an american kestrel. They are beautiful birds.

What exactly defines a field guide? Mine is huge and has been okay and invites and regionals, but I'm worried. It looks kind of like an encyclopedia. The rules clarification said "anything that can be used to identify birds in the field" and I think mine is okay, but I wan't to be sure.
BTW we got second in both tournaments.

At regionals, I brought The Reader's Digest Book of North American Birds, I wasn't allowed to use it though, because it wasn't a field guide. Instead I used the National Audubon Society Field Guide to Birds, the Eastern Edition. It was ultimately a better choice anyway, because the birds are classified by their body shape and color, rather than names or anything of that source.

How do you tell the difference between a olive-sided catcher and an eastern phoebe? All of the pictures I've seen look the same.

But look at the wikipedia picture for the eastern phoebe; it's completely different and looks smaller:

i think the tail of the eastern phoebe is a bit longer than the olive sided flycatcher

Okay. I had my States competition yesterday

I GOT 1ST IN ORNITHOLOGY!!! *happydance*

But our test was pretty easy. Only two vocals (the meadowlark and wood thrush), and most of the birds were easy ones (ie. the first one was a Northern Cardinal, and everyone shouted the answer out O_o).

We had a powerpoint test, so the sound didn't work until the end, and I was lucky that I knew the vocals easily XD

Also, wondering... how do you get your score for the tests?
