This is a good example of the sort of "out of the box" thinking that gets people disqualified. Really, take the rules for what they were intended to mean! There are enough situations where the rules are unclear without trying to "stretch" their meaning.iEATPOOP wrote:i just measure my plane with my belt. idk if its cheating but i have a belt with a ruler on it

Information expressed here is solely the opinion of the author. Any similarity to that of the management or any official instrument is purely coincidental! Doing Science Olympiad since 1987!
Re: Junkyard Challenge (C)
I used a ruler in my most previous invite and i was put in tier 3. They attached a copy of the rules and underlined the statement about the scales and added a note stating that a ruler was a scale.

Re: Junkyard Challenge (C)
assume a ruler is not allowed.. you would still be allowed to take a piece of paper that you made marks on at certain increments... right?? If you're worried about the ruler thing, make your own 'scale' of length

On that topic, I find this program very handy in order to print graph paper that we use for our junkyard.

Wow. Thanks BG. That's really a big help. I've been trying to think of an effective way to make a ruler. This definitely does minimize my thinking!

Re: Junkyard Challenge (C)
I'm sorry this happened to you. "Commercial scale" is supposed to mean things-that-measure-mass, not rulers. A ruler is a ruler. A scale is a scale. If you walk into a hardware store and ask for a "distance scale", they would stare back blankly. Sadly, some judges over think things just as much as students.jet1891 wrote:I used a ruler in my most previous invite and i was put in tier 3. But if you ask an architect, engineer or geographer what that thing with the lines on it is, he will tell you that it is his scale.

Before the event, you should probably ask for a rule clarification, just in case.
