To be honest, this event confuses me. I'd like to do it, but our coaches don't have any experience with it; nor does anyone that we know of that would be willing to help.
I just hope we can find some good stuff on the Net.

My school just went to an invitational and my friend and I tried this event for the first time. It went pretty well... wasn't as confusing as it looked.

We were allowed to bring notes, and we just had to test soil for potash and pH levels (they told us what to do, and basically walked us through the testing), read and "analyze" fake fertilizer labels ("which one has more nitrogen?", which one would be better for plants that grow well in a low pH?" etc.), and answer questions based on a list of vegetables/fruits/plants and the pH levels where they grow best.

I'm not gonna call it easy, but in my opinion, it definitely wasn't as hard as anatomy. Hope this helps! [=

hmmm... anatomy...

WELL.

We were given a model of the heart and had to label it; we got a picture of a bone and had to label that too; there were like 3-5 problems on calculating blood pressure (or something like that... we kinda had to guess); you need to know a ton about the lymphatic system (biggest organ, how it works, etc.); you also need to know the circulation between the heart, lungs, and body... and that's all I remember.

(If I remember any more, I'll post it!)

it depends on the questions. there is a testing part of the event which can get tricky because obviously in a lab situation there is always the potential for error; but a lot of it just asks for information about environmental science stuff and basic chem stuff (last year they had us ID chemicals based on the formulas i think...western LI if u did this event, does anyone remember?)

does anyone know what kind of questions they'll be focusing on for soil testing this year?

organic compounds/wastes (phosphates, nitrates, etc) and biomagnification are both good places to start. major envi chem issues in fairly recent history (ex: last year they asked about DDT and eagles)

Is Division C focusing on soil testing or water testing this year (2009)? It seems that the people on this forum are saying that it's water testing, but the event packet I'm looking at says "This event will focus on Soil Chemistry related to Environmental Chemistry."

Also, does anybody have links to practice tests? What about suggestions on how to approach this event?
