Just some April Fool's Day fun for our team. Yes, way too hard.

We did over an hour of appropriate words (fulcrum, iron oxide, cumulus), then this list! They each sketched an easy word (moon, root, star) and then came these words that none of them SHOULD know. One mom got a video on the phone of them. And it was funny; oh their faces! All six of us (moms, kids) were laughing by about the sixth or seventh passed word. ALL good fun.

One kid said, "Hey, we got through all 25 words before the timer."

April Fools! (and I see that last year's AF jokes are active this year again - the the the)

Jokes aside, I made a quizlet set of common words. Do you think that's a good idea?

Yup good idea! Share it with your partners - you want each of the three of you to have the same vocabulary. That way, if you are the sketcher and you see something that you know the other two most likely know, you give it a good try. If you see a word that you don't know, chances are they don't know it too!

Hey does anyone know if the following drawings are acceptable, or are they considered symbols?

-crossing something out with an "X"
(e.x. drawing a vertebrate and crossing it out to represent an invertebrate)
-Using the volume sign (like on your computer or phone) or a music sign
-Using front signs (cold front, occluded front, warm front, etc.)
-Using dots to represent molecules (e.x. drawing an amino acid and using dots to represent carbon/nitrogen/carboxyl)
-Smiley or frowny faces to represent symbiotic relationships
-Drawing a homonym of a word (cymbal for symbol)

We've tried to avoid things that look like symbols but someone could argue everything is a symbol, right. Instead of crossing out something, consider scribbling it out or just use an arrow (allowable) to focus on the right thing.

Remember, when in doubt, err on the side of caution. While you might be right and maybe in the end the event supervisors and/or arbitration sides with you, but it's really not worth it to gamble on this.

Thank you both. We interpreted the rules as meaning that as long as the symbol represents the word, it is okay. Has anyone encountered any problems at their event where a supervisor has considered something iffy a symbol? (Our region didn't run this event at regionals, so we have no experience with the event's actual format). Thanks again!

Every Event Supervisor is different. An Event Supervisor at one tournament might allow it, but another might intepret it differently. Maybe you can contact your tournament director.

This has happened way too many times...Our Wright and Solon proctors were more lenient, understanding, and knew the rules manual better, whereas in Regionals, the proctors were clueless...

As for states, we have to wait until the 25th!
