Wait so the asterisk next to Odonata means we have to be able to distinguish between the larvae of each family? I thought it meant we just have to be able to ID a larvae from the order Odonata

I'm not really too sure about Odonata larvae...

That explains the adults mainly, but you may be able to find some other stuff on that site...?

I'm not too sure about this one either... On all of the Ento tests I've taken in the past 1.5 years, Odonata larvae have only been on 1 of them, and we had to know them to the family. Of course, they have probably been on other tests that i don't remember.
So basically, put them on your cheat sheet just in case.

Also do any of you know a good way to identify stag beetles from bess beetles? thx.

I can't think of a single source that has all of that information, but a source I use a lot is NC State's Entomology pages. In general they have a lot of good solid info. This particular page (http://www.cals.ncsu.edu/course/ent425/ ... index.html) has information on all the orders and certain families on a variety of subjects including morphology. I hope this was helpful. If not I would try googling each family you need info on and see what comes up.

I always remember stag beetles because they have the horns like a stag (also I remember a HP reference ), and have a smooth elytra. Bess beetles don't have as defined horns and have a lined elytra. Also if you are still having trouble telling them apart you can look at pictures of them right next to each other and think of ways to distinguish them. I hope that that was helpful!

This is Entomology's last year. The next two years are Herpetology followed by 2 years of Ornithology.

For cheat sheets, it depends on how visual you want it to be. For me, I like to furiously flip through a field guide if I need a visual, and words work better, so mine is a two-sided mess of size 5 font. However, if you feel like pictures would do it better, I've seen that as well.

I would recommend putting the names of all the orders/families with pictures and the page number of the order/family in whatever field guide you are using. If you have room information for orders/families is probably helpful plus diagrams and charts. Hope this was helpful!
