Re: Illinois 2011
I think it was pretty even. The ID was easy, except they had small specimens in boxes in extremely reflective Ziploc bags, which made them a little difficult to see clearly. I can think of a few different questions right now, but nothing that stood out as being especially hard. Kjhsscioly, what do you think?

Article about CLC in our local newspaper:
http://www.nwherald.com/2011/01/22/area ... d/a2qhia6/
And an older one from the Chicago Tribune:

Nice to see we're getting some coverage, isn't it?

Re: Illinois 2011
Hmm... Fossils had fairly easy ID, but there were certain annoying questions. Something about russian lava flows if i remember correctly...
Either way, it focused too much on lystrosaurus. The one question I was torn over was the one about it being a tetrapod. If I remembered correctly, it should have been Quadriped, but the other option was that it lacked a temporal fenestra, which it appeared to in a picture, but because I wasn't sure, I went with tetrapod. Curse this latin greek discrepancy
. Other than that, there really wasn't any major glitch.

Re: Illinois 2011
Hmm was it multiple choice kjhsscioly?
And Russian Lava flows? Whaaa??? And Lystrosaurus do have temporal fenestra. I believe it's a distinguishing characterisitic of synapsids.

Re: Illinois 2011
I will look at the test on the lava flows, but yes, it was multiple choice. Like I said, what threw me off was the use of a greek (tetrapod) term where latin (quadriped) is more common. Just goes to show what happens when people who don't know the field write the test.

Re: Illinois 2011
Who has regionals coming up? 10ish weeks till state....it's amazing how much more i'm looking forward to it this year than last. Of course i suppose it makes sense since the quality of work i've put forth this year is nothing i woud've expected of myself when i did division B in the 8th grade.
Anyway, how many teams are at your regionals? There are 9 at mine...hopefully i can grab golds in all my events, we'll see.

Re: Illinois 2011
Ten weeks till state? You're kidding! But now that I'm thinking about it, that sounds about right. State is the day after my half birthday. That's right, I'm spending my half birthday on a buslllazar wrote:Who has regionals coming up? 10ish weeks till state....it's amazing how much more i'm looking forward to it this year than last. Exciting news! My coach finally put me on Varsity, and I get to keep all of the same events. I even gained Forensics, which is a blast! I have one more Invite next weekend, and Regionals is 4 weeks after that. So, five weeks overall. There are 20 teams at CLC this year-13 Varsity, 7 JV. But we have some powerhouses like Stevenson and Crystal Lake Central to contend with. Mission Possible is still a tossup, but I'm hoping I can medal in Fossils, Ornithology, and Forensics. I had gold in Fossils and Ornithology last year on JV anyway,
