Are lynxmotion body, platform and wheel kits legal?

By NY rules, no. I'd doubt Nats would allow kits without modifications either.
Besides, their kits never seemed especially beefy or low to me, at least not at their prices.

Okay GH. Been reading some of your 2008-2009 posts. Am familiar with Solidworks but how did you cut out the vertical chassis on Harpy? I am a newbie--is there a machine tool? And couldn't you utilize an omnidirectional wheel or bearing in the scoop to take weight off the scoop?

Uh, what? Harpy is made from panels cut out of sheets of PETG (an impact resistant thermoplastic). There are tabs and slots and a few t-slots to connect the pieces together. The chassis was not made in one piece. Not everyone has access to CNC mills, and even those who do are often obstructed by other wasteful organizations as well as bureaucracy.
I don't think you quite understand the point behind weight distribution. It's not get weight off of the scoop—in fact, you want maybe 100 grams weight on it to press the edge down—it's to get more weight on the powered wheels doing the pushing. Pushing force is the friction between the wheels and the floor, and that is a function of the floor's force on the wheels in the direction normal to the floor's surface.

So i volunteered for sumo bots at nats, just got back, DEFINITELY doing this event next year...The top six finalists were:
Fayetville Manlius (spelling errors?)
Ward Mellville
Centreville
New Trier
Solon
Langston
Other than the top two, the rest aren't the exact rankings because the judges still have to score and what not and we won't know 3rd place till the awards ceremony. Few things id like to touch upon:
I can understand two New York teams taking first and second. They had this event as an ACTUAL event...but 2 Ohio teams? Just goes to show ya how good they are...
From what i saw, a good driver was key. This may be obvious but i was surprised to see, especially at the Nats level, drivers who just didn't take advantage of multiple opportunities. Obviously, it's a trial event, but many (most) of the competitors were alternates...maybe the lack of time to prepare as compared to the NY schools who had been doing this all year? However, id have to say the best driver, in my opinion, was the girl from Ward Mellville...If they're bot hadn't had so many mechanical problems throughout the day, i'm sure they would have had better luck.
