Re: Pennsylvania 2010
i dont think that it would be fair at all to use the trial events, because people doing the trial events go in fully expecting to just have fun. i mean, getting a medal for trial events would be awesome, but it doesnt have the same pressure that real events do, and some people may not have even studied that much for trial events. if they used that as a tie breaker, a really good team may end up with a really bad score for trial events. anyway, the chances of that happening is so slim that theres not much reason to be discusing it.tclme elmo wrote: EDIT: According to Wikipedia..There are several ways to break a tie (draw):
* Before a competition, the event organizer decides on several events to be used as tie-breakers. If two teams get the same score overall, the team that rates highest in that one event will take the lead.
* Another method for tie-breaking is based on medals where the team with more first place medals wins, if both teams have the same amount of first places, it moves to second place medals and so on.
* A third way of tie-breaking is to use a team's score in trial/pilot events. The team with the best combined score in trial events would win the competition when this method is used.

Re: Pennsylvania 2010
Our state only uses tiebreaker #2 on that list, and it is unthinkable to go beyond that one. Using trials to break ties is mostly for states like New York, where the Trials counts towards the total score as if it were a real event.

Re: Pennsylvania 2010
Why would you need to send three teams since a tie with the same score and the same number of each place would not be possible unless you were talking about a 23 way tie?AlphaTauri wrote:Number of silvers, then bronze, then 4th, and so on. It is a quite interesting hypothetical question, though. Would they give the state 3 teams?junexia wrote:yeah, im wondering the same thing. i know for tiebreakers they go to number of medals, then first place medals, but what comes after that?AlphaTauri wrote:Wow, ONE point. What would happen if (however impossible) they had an unbreakable tie for 2nd?

not necessarily, its just that the total score would be the exact same.OtherWhiteMeat wrote:Why would you need to send three teams since a tie with the same score and the same number of each place would not be possible unless you were talking about a 23 way tie?

Re: Pennsylvania 2010
Yes but then you would look at 1st place medals to break the tie, then 2nd, and so on. It would be impossible for this process to remain a tie.junexia wrote:not necessarily, its just that the total score would be the exact same.OtherWhiteMeat wrote:Why would you need to send three teams since a tie with the same score and the same number of each place would not be possible unless you were talking about a 23 way tie?

Re: Pennsylvania 2010
I think that if it really were to happen, they might make one of the states that really aren't that competitive (hawaii maybe? i'm completely just guessing) give up a spot.

Re: Pennsylvania 2010
but that would be completely unfair too. i dont think it'll ever happen anyway, so it doesnt really matter.genius3point14159 wrote:I think that if it really were to happen, they might make one of the states that really aren't that competitive (hawaii maybe? i'm completely just guessing) give up a spot.
