Hovercraft B/C
Re: Hovercraft B/C
Hey my dudes. Just wandering what motor is the best for propulsion is? Also in regionals our Hovercraft went for like 1 and 1/2 feet then slowly stopped. Any suggestions for how we could fix this problem? Thanks!

It depends on the competition a lot. I've seen crafts that carry no rolls and I've seen ones that carry full 16. If you're trying to come in top 3 at regionals, it's probably a different standard than if you're trying to medal at Nationals.samuel.barlow003 wrote:How many penny rolls is everyone getting because I'm not doing so great.
I'd recommend just buying the most powerful fans you can and try to perfect your skirt. I'm a personal fan of the bag skirt, though I've seen successful designs that used momentum curtains as well.

Re: Hovercraft B/C
I've seen hovercrafts that operate without skirts. Granted, they levitate at most 2 or 3 mm above the ground. A skirt is definitely ideal though for a multitude of reasons.UTF-8 U+6211 U+662F wrote:How does your hovercraft function without a skirtsamuel.barlow003 wrote:What if I don't have a skirt?antoine_ego wrote:

Re: Hovercraft B/C
You can indeed get away without a skirt. But in my opinion, as Justin72835 said, it's much more beneficial to have one. First off, if there's some weird inconsistency in the track, you have a greater margin or error if you have a skirt since you will be able to glide over it no problem. Secondly, it nearly guarantees that your craft hovers. Granted, this usually isn't too big a concern, but if say your battery is running low, a skirt gives you the ability to run on lower voltages. Thirdly, it reduces friction along the track if you design it well. Fourth, if necessary, it allows you to redirect some of the air from the bottom fan our back and gives you an extra boost if you're struggling to go forwards. Finally, it makes it super easy to carry maximum load, even with 2 large battery packs and a ton of other stuff.Justin72835 wrote:I've seen hovercrafts that operate without skirts. It is perfectly flat all the way around the edge of the bottom and it levitates like that.UTF-8 U+6211 U+662F wrote:How does your hovercraft function without a skirtsamuel.barlow003 wrote:What if I don't have a skirt?antoine_ego wrote:

Re: Hovercraft B/C
with no skirt, chances that you can carry 16 rolls of pennies are close to 0. Unless you have some sort of a jet engine motor, it's not gonna be able to levitate 2 kg
