A vetting or checking process should take a time of a few months to maybe a year or two. Reducing the average time for legal immigration to a year would already reduce the amount of people attempting to immigrate illegally tremendously. Are there always going to be people who try to get around the system? Yes, of course; but an increase in the number of criminals getting around the system would pale in comparison to the number of regular people who just want an honest living.

Re: Politics
That is a 100% accurate statement. If we are to reduce the number of illegal immigrants crossing over we need to improve the vetting process for legal immigrants. We can't just let anyone into this country but if we can make the process faster we can make sure who we are letting in will benefit the American population. Remember almost all illegal immigrants came to this country in search of the American Dream and many come to make a better life for their families. We cannot forget that this country was built off the backs of immigrants. We just tack on the word "illegal" because the "legal" process is too long for many of these immigrants to wait for so they just skip the paperwork as a whole.EastStroudsburg13 wrote:Ah, okay, apologies for misinterpreting. There's definitely some middle ground to be found, but it's clear that what we're doing right now isn't working. The "wall" is really just an empty distraction that won't fix the real problems for either side.Things2do wrote:I don't think I had the proper wording... Half of them are criminals, the other half are people with good intentions, but a lot of illegal immigrants are a part of gangs, or were criminals in the past (MS-13).

Re: Politics
I'm not going to say that it's not a complex issue. But, there are peer-reviewed research studies that do not bare truth to this.
Example 1
Example 2
Peer-reviewed studies hold an important place in science; they are equally important in social science.

Re: Politics
Also from a logical standpoint: if you illegally immigrated over to the U.S., do you want to draw attention to yourself and cause people to take notice? And hence more, if you are an illegal immigrant their reasons for stealing and larceny are low, as any job that they can find here will pay more than enough to keep them afloat in comparison to what they would have made previously in their hometowns of Honduras or other like country. Plus, illegal immigrants take the jobs that native born Americans, no matter if they are unemployed, turn their noses at, boosting our economy.

Re: Politics
Back from the dead! I've been wondering what everyone thinks of the Shutdown and if it was worth it. I say it was not...
(It also delayed my FAFSA so thx Trump
)
Also, I was wondering where people stand on the political spectrum? (Poll here)
I apparently identify as Democrat with Socialist as my second party. Makes sense as I'm a slight left wing centrist.

Re: Politics
ISW is a little weird once it gets down to differentiating between similar parties; I have my doubts at how precisely they can assign a 1% difference between my matches with the Green and Women's Equality parties. It's important to remember that while online tests are useful in some ways, they shouldn't shape one's entire identity.
That said, it's a neat little test to take, and a bit more nuanced than the Political Compass (which has been done by people on this site in the past). I will decline to share my exact order and percentages, but that's just personal preference; as long as there are no personal attacks being made, people can feel free to share their own results.

Re: Politics
In response to the Cohen testimony, what do people think of it? I think for once he's telling the truth but it will hard to believe him given his previous record so it looks like Trump will remain untouched impeachment wise... Also, the moment when Cohen called out Trump for not going to fight in Vietnam yet Trump said "I'm not stupid. I'm never going to Vietnam" and Trump was just in Vietnam with the Glorious Leader... No surprise that no nuke agreement was reached. At this point, Trump is just allowing the N Koreans time to better develop their weapons until Trump leaves office. Thoughts anyone?
