Black will have most leaflets at 7-13 per leaf, while the other two have anywhere from 5 to 9.

To tell White from Green, White's leafs are 3-5" long while Green is 1-2".

Green will have a shorter petiole (where the leaflets connect to the center.) then White, and Black will be totally sessile. (not petiole!)

Certainly! Petioles as a whole or just for these trees?

(note, I stand corrected. It is "petiole" on simple trees and "petiolule" on compound where the leaflets connect to the center, which I can guess may still be a "petiole" :) )

I thought that White Ash has the longer petiole (like below) and oregon ash has the absent petiole. I don't know about green and black ash.\

Oops, I completely misread the quote above mine explaining the ashes!

Oh I was just talking about white, green and black ash. I'm not sure about oregon but I did check the black ash and I don't think it has a petiole.

You don't really have to worry about petiolules on Black, so I'll go to the other two. Just remember that there is none.

Green is about 1/8" long, while White is 1/4" to 1/2" long, so there is a definite difference if you look hard (this may be hard to tell depending on picture and quality, so go with your gut! :) )

That is about all my book has and I'll I usually use to identify. It is pretty hard to identify with the seed (a samara) though White and Green seem to have a "notch" while Black does not. Hope this helps!

Question for everyone...

What book(s) did you use?
I used this fabulous little guide, though it was missing a few trees from the list we added to our notes.

If you look at the earlier posts, I think on pages 32-35, I think people talk about what kinds of book are best for people with different background knowledge on trees.
