Keeping the Events 2018-2019 thread on topic, I'll share this here.

2017 Michigan State Hovercraft. I was a senior taking the test alongside sixth graders. Yeah, we were put in the same room. I think the Div B teams were told to ignore the fluid mechanics section. I would have complained earlier, but our build portion let us down anyway.

I even let a Div B boy borrow my calculator. His parents told him to thank me afterwards and they slid a few dollars into my calculator.

This last year, history was removed from Hovercraft C. At the Westlake invitational, guess what was on the test, and not in our binder.
Not to mention our regionals Hovercraft test, reused in its entirety from last season.

For Disease Detectives at the State tournament, we were given a Div C. test with most of it being confusing Div. C statistics (Statistic Power, Sensitivity, etc.). We ended up not placing despite DD being my best event and the one I studied the most. Hoping to exact my revenge for next year, though.

Also, Wright Stuff was held in a narrow room and Roller Coaster was held in a room with carpeting (which isn't very flat). The VA States were pretty poor in 2018, but at least I had good proctors for Fast Facts and Experimental Design.

The room for wright stuff was definitely narrow; I recall at least few planes and helicopters running straight into walls.

Oh they held helicopters there too? I would think that they would have had a wider room, though.

For me, hovercraft has had a bad time being run properly. At regionals in 2017, there was no target time, so they said fastest time wins. They ended up throwing out the time score. At NC states, the exams and device testing were in the same room. It was so loud that I had to shout to communicate with my teammate. Next year at regionals, the ES didn't see the rule saying that a run is failed if the hovercraft doesn't move for 3 seconds. My teammate managed to desolder his 8.4v nimh battery by running it for 45 seconds straight. At states, the ES stopped my 6th run after he noticed arcing between the brushes and the commutator. He thought that was dangerous when in reality, arcing is normal and expected from large brushed DC motors. That run was an attempt at a 16 pennies, so it put a lot of stress on the motor to propeller connection. The next run, the propeller flies off and pierces through the safety netting (screening for a sunroom), ending my runs. At least I got 4th.
