In section 3.c. of the rules, it basically says that specimens should be leaves, possibly accompanied by twigs, cones, seeds, or other parts of the tree. The whole tree wouldn't count as a part of the tree, therefor I don't think it's legal.
I know! It makes me so mad when event supervisors don't read the rules! At my regionals, not ony did they give a pic of a whole tree, for one of them, they made us identify it by literally just a chunk of bark! I wonder if anyone got that one...

They should only give you trees marked with and "R" on the Minnesota List, yes.

It was ok because it was only I.D. and then a multiple choice Q about the tree. It was a little stresful though. One of the JV kids was almost in tears at the end.

I just did this event at regionals (my partner and I got 2nd place!!), and at some of the stations there was just a branch of a tree to identify. The branches didn't have any leaves on them, but a few did have some thorns. How would you identify the tree based on a bare branch??? Also, at the state competitions will they use the state tree lists or the national tree list?

Nice job, and for the branches, it kind of depends on the branch. They tchnically should've given you a leaf for each ID, but a lot of peopl ehave said that their region/state hasnt done that. The only way I could identify a brnch is if its a honeylocust cause those have huge thorns, any other branch though, i have no idea! And for the state comp, they should use the state list which I think is kind of wierd becauae for the regionals, they used state list too(at least for me) so i dont understand what exactly makes it any harder than regionals?
Anywy, hope that helped!
