While this may not be the best way for you to practice, I've found that a very good way to practice is to have someone on your team build something out of any available materials, including Legos, K'NEX, Lincoln Logs, even random lab equipment, and then practice either writing or doing with that model, depending on what you plan to do in competition. For example, I was a writer, so a few times a week I would write for a structure and have my partner construct the structure from my description immediately afterward, so we could check the accuracy of the structure he built and discuss how I needed to change my writing or how we could better interpret the instructions. If you're not sure whether you're a better writer or doer, try both: write and do a few structures and find which one you perform better on.

yeah all we did was have coaches build a structure and one person write and the other person build it

Frankly, I've never seen a competition that didn't use manufactured building materials of some sort. I've seen Legos, K'nex, Googolplex... and really that's about it. And I've competed in this event for 6 years. People just aren't very creative. The best was one year at regionals with Legos, but also a little part with pipe cleaners and a balloon.

Really? I guess that they just don't like those here for the last 3 year they haven't used any building sets here just a lot of styrofoam and stuff you stick in it, guess Colorado is just weird like that
