Re: Heredity B/Designer Genes C
I know that one page of information front and back is allowed on the day of the competition; however, are we allowed to put sticky notes on the page?

At rida: No. You are only allowed what you can fit on the page itself.
To answer PicturePerfect (at least on some cases):
1. At the B division level, the rules do not mention DNA fingerprints. They may be mentioned, but I wouldn't devote a tremendous amount of time to studying them.
2. For the Hardy-Weinerg problem, was there more information given? I'm not sure how one would solve this one with only this information. However, at the B-division level, there is no requirement for it on the rules.
3. I might know the differences (at the most basic level) between them (uses, basically) just in case they show up in like a vocab section or something, but I wouldn't be too concerned about them. They aren't in the rules.
4. The number of possibilities for each trait multiplied together. Like this would be 2x2x2x2x2=32.
5. That might be a rounding issue- I can't be sure without seeing it. And this is none, because the kidney shape is a form of incomplete dominance between the round and slit shape. The males only have one X chromosome, so they can't be heterozygous, and thus can't have the blended form.
6. I would assume that the C allows production of pigment, and without it, there cannot be production of the pigment. I'd make a punnet square, CcIi x CcIi. Then, because you must be ii with a C to be colored, just cross them out and count the remainder. I got 13/16 being white.
~Hope this helped! Feel free to ask me anything, this is like my absolute favorite.

Re: Heredity B/Designer Genes C
yes division b can bring a double sided note sheet

sciencegeek999 wrote:Can Division B participants bring a note sheet?
Speaking of notes, I heard that someone in Designer Genes wrote notes all over their arms, but I have no clue what happened to them.

Re: Heredity B/Designer Genes C
Hi! I'm new to this event and I had a question about the genotype ratios:
How do you know how to order the genotypes when writing the genotype ratio? Does it matter if you label everything?
For example, if the genotype is 1 D/D: 2 D/H: 1 D/R: 4 H/H: 4 H/D: 1 R/D: 2 R/H: 1 R/R, would it matter if you wrote it as 2 D/H: 1 D/D: 1 D/R: 4 H/H: 4 H/D: 2 R/H: 1 R/D: 1 R/R?
Thanks so much in advance for your help!

Re: Heredity B/Designer Genes C
Well, the tests are multiple choice (I'm pretty sure all of them are), so as long as the numbers match yours, that'll be the answer. And if there's a label, it should be labeled the same as yours. If it's not multiple choice, you should probably label it just in case. I usually label it something like:
AA:Aa:aa
2:1:1
Your way works too, but I don't know if there's any specific way to label it.

[I'm assuming you're referring to a cross with two traits here, with D as homozygous dominant, H as heterozygous, and R being recessive?]reichenbach wrote:Hi! I'm new to this event and I had a question about the genotype ratios:

I'm pretty sure that at least tradition (possibly also a rule) dictates that it goes in the order
DD:DH:DR:HD:HH:HR:RD:RH:RR
Such that a standard cross between two heterozygous individuals (AaBb x AaBb) would result in the ratio
1:2:1:2:4:2:1:2:1
[Also- I like the username, even if it did nearly cause me to go on a rant in the middle of the library. Violently in need of that elusive creature Season 3.]

Re: Heredity B/Designer Genes C
Wow, haven't been on in a while...
Anyways, i bought one of the discs and i printed out the sample tournament (I'm doing Heredity B not Designer Genes), and now I'm looking for some more sample tests. I'm wondering if the Designer Genes material is similar enough to Heredity so I can use a Designer Genes practice test to study for Heredity.

Re: Heredity B/Designer Genes C
I think they're basically the same topic, just that Designer Genes is more in-depth and difficult than Heredity. So, to answer your question, yes, you can use DG stuff to study for Heredity.EAtBaNAna wrote:Wow, haven't been on in a while...
