I made this post but edited it to just fit into one post, how do you delete your own post, general forum help?

Other then on posting games I'm not allowed to delete my own posts either. I've seen other complaints about this issue... I hope the admis can fix this problem.

VeritasEnVida wrote:Genissnice, can you elaborate a little on that? So clay will float when water is denser than the clay, but that only measure for that one level of salinity shouldn't it or are you saying it floats a little bit more? in increments, that's a awesome idea but one bump and you could be off by a couple percentage points which would suck
also would the clay dry out when not in use and then when it's moist that would affect it also hmmm
It shouldn't be all clay, because it would sink in any saltwater solution (except maybe like 99%). You should have a hollow glass tube with the clay inside it or attached to it. You would then measure different saltwater solutions and mark on the tube how far the salinometer sinks into the water. These measurements would allow you to figure out the salinity of water based on the density which you would calculate with the salinometer.

I am not sure what your last paragraph means, so if you explain it to me more, I might be able to help with that too. :)

I wonder the legality of using electricity for the salinometer.

I think it would probably be allowed if it was battery operated and did not need to be plugged in. It seems like it could be extremely hard to make/calibrate.

Electricity may give more exact results if you are able to measure the exact current for each salinity level.

Of I see, just put a little bit of clay in the tube, would it tip do you think? and also how much saltwater are they giving us?

They can put different concentrations of salt, but I'm not sure how much water they will give.

Should we assume that the salinity will be based on a NaCl solution? Or should we expect to see other salts (KCl, LiCl, MgCl2, etc.) in the solution?

Hopefully just NaCl. If there was other stuff mixed in, it could get really tricky and quite difficult to test. I'm not sure though.
