Thanks but we are still studying and haven't made the cuts for the 15 yet. I am not sure I'll even make it past this last cut. :( I am really scared. I am not the best at any event[not the worst, either], but I used to study with my friends during lunch before they were cut. Now, I have nobody to study with, I am all alone. Just when I was getting used to their complaining. XD

Really, cheat sheets? My coach said that all we really need is a calculator and our brain, and cheat sheets aren't allowed. O.o

Thanks!
Well, the rules say that one sheet is allowed, so unless your coach has a thing against the rules, you can certainly make and bring a cheat sheet. And if they ask you what disease is evidenced by symptoms, they'll usually givve you choices of diseases and their descriptions, instead of asking for them on top of your head. My only experience with having to identify diseases is as a tiebreaker where you had to identify what caused each disease.

Look at section three of the Disease Detectives rules. On my copy, it says:
Sample Problems and Resources may be found at http://www.soinc.org
Take a look at that website! They have online resources for all of the events, especially the really old ones like disease detectives. Just check out the event info page on disease detectives. There's even a whole section on glossaries and dictionaries! That's three good websites for vocab, and much more. :D

I think this is under the soinc link, but I love this page, and it has a TON of vocab. Some is not really necessary, but most of it is really good:

So, I am relatively new to this event, and I have looked at some tests, but I have a few questions for the experienced ones:

a) why is this a lab event? is there really a "lab" type portion?
b)are the questions more analytical, or fact based?
c)is there a lot of calculation involved?

A) In some places, the event is station based, in other places they have a slideshow, and most places just have a written exam (I've never actually seen a lab like DD test)
B) The questions are much more analytical, most of the tests I've taken only the tiebreakers are fact-based. Some of the basic stuff is fact-based however, nothing too complex though
C) Yes, lots of calculation is involved (odds ratio, relative risk...) and they expect you to show all work etc.

that helps a lot to get the feel of the event, thanks for the info. I just needed to figure out which way to direct further study.

Is there a list of vocab that we should memorize?

I would expect to see vocabulary from any of those three lists on a test.
