Get out and find specimens of all the trees you live near. Our local Arboretum in Fullerton has at least 30 species on the list, including species like pawpaw, bur oak, and others, which would be hard to find elsewhere in California.

Get the Sibley/NWF field guide, and memorize several of the trees at a time, and then have someone else quiz you with pictures from the internet.

The forestry ID thread is also really good.

Thank you very much! After a quick search I found a local arboretum so I might check that out.

You think it's a good idea to get the Sibley/NWF field guide if we already have Audobon?

Audubon is good for random information for the different trees, but is not that great for identification. If you're not solid with identification, getting sibley/NWF is probably a good idea.

At regionals they can only give you the state tree list right?

If you have a state list, then yes, they should draw only from that list at the regional competition. They may even narrow that list - in Minnesota, regional trees are marked specially on the state list.

Has anyone had trouble identifying the whole tree, without any leaves, flowers, fruit, etc.? In one test we took, we were given a picture a whole tree. My partner and I could not identify the tree, for it looked similar to about 10 others on the list. However, if they had given us another picture, we could most likely have identified it.

Yes!!!!! This happned to me too at regionals! I was so mad cause its not really allowed. Anyway, ours was American Elm, and we just flipped through our audobon and found one that looked like it. We ended up getting it right (i googled it and the pic showed up!) but I think that if you get it wring in this case, almost everyone else will too so thats how I thought about it.

Well, the reason I got mad about it was because that was one of the only ones (we think) we got wrong, so it was probably that question that one other team got right that made us get 2nd (however, I'm not complaining about 2nd place :D ).

In section 3.c. of the rules, it basically says that specimens should be leaves, possibly accompanied by twigs, cones, seeds, or other parts of the tree. The whole tree wouldn't count as a part of the tree, therefor I don't think it's legal.
