Can't you borrow a hot plate and a large container from the high school chemistry lab?nhmsicioly wrote:Thank you. I guess I should have prefaced my question with, Given we don't have access to a water bath...how do we deliver water...sorry. We are looking at microwaves, coffeepots and teakettles. I'm sure our Regional competition will have a water bath to run this event, but the middle school doesn't for the Invite.

A week before Regionals and I have NO IDEA what our thermo device is going to be. This is bad, isn't it?

nah its good. This is exactly how our team functions. 1 week before, make a device or ________ (insert building event). get 3rd xDDforeverphysics wrote:A week before Regionals and I have NO IDEA what our thermo device is going to be. This is bad, isn't it?

Re: Keep the Heat B/Thermodynamics C
Not as bad as you might think. Grab some 3/8" plywood, slap together a 20x20x20cm box with a lid, and stuff it chock-full of cotton balls. (Hint: glue a layer of cotton balls to your lid.) Add a hinge if you're feeling fancy (duct tape works too), create a beaker-shaped divot, and presto!foreverphysics wrote:A week before Regionals and I have NO IDEA what our thermo device is going to be. Allot about ten hours to test the thing. Obviously, you don't need to sit there, but you'll want at least ten tests to run a quick multiple regression to get you accurate within the degree.
Classic Science Olympiad style. (Build bottle rocket night before state competition, get first place. Take that, Murphy!)mrsteven wrote:nah its good. Is ink on a preprinted label such as a cereal box allowed? Are we allowed to paint our container? Thanks!

Re: Keep the Heat B/Thermodynamics C
How many variables should I test for the graph?
i already did 100mL,125mL,150mL,175mL,200mL at 60 degrees.....and I plan to do 60,70,80,90 degrees at 150mL...
suggestions? is this too much or too little?

Re: Keep the Heat B/Thermodynamics C
One of the chalkers should probably answer that, but I'd say that if it was preprinted on the cardboard it would be fine, but painting your device is questionable. Things like this really all depend on the given event's judge/proctorStrongWind wrote:Is ink on a preprinted label such as a cereal box allowed? Are we allowed to paint our container? Thanks!

Re: Keep the Heat B/Thermodynamics C
Someone actually asked about painting before. I believe the consensus was: why put your device at risk? Paint does contribute to the insulation properties of a device, if only marginally.harryk wrote:One of the chalkers should probably answer that, but I'd say that if it was preprinted on the cardboard it would be fine, but painting your device is questionable. val_chen, you'll need to do some different volumes at each temperature to fully measure the effect of each variable.
