It is my impression that he would be perfectly entitled to tell you to put you vehicle in launch position and step out of the box, then give you the pencil. It is also my impression from your description that this would leave you pretty much up the creek.

In short, put a loop on your pencil.
Could you specify what you mean put a loop on the pencil? And to be more specific, the pencil is used to move a chunk of wood, which once removed releases the vehicle. I wouldn't really need to be inside the box I guess I could reach over, and I think if you weren't be able to handle the pencil it would be impossible to create a release mechanism. More opinions would be appreciated and thanks a bunch flavorflav

Just a suggestion, but instead of pencil why not a wooden dowel? That way you can put an eye screw at the end of the dowel, and now you have a loop that you can stick a pencil in, and pull.

This is basically what I have but instead of a dowel and screw eye its a piece of wood with a hole in it, you put the pencil in pull. But now flavorflav mentions that the supervisor might not let you handle the pencil in that way. I'm just trying to figure out if its legal :P

No, that's not my issue. Even if I use any sort of loop, it will exit the dimensions before the vehicle starts its run.

Could you tape a piece of string to the other end, effectively creating a tether that would at least ensure that your release mechanism isn't touch the floor? Because based on the clarification I posted early, it's fine if the release mechanism ends up outside the dimensions after the vehicle is released.

I wasn't in the invitationals, so would you care to explain how the supervisor told you to handle the pencil. Did he just hand you the pencil and you just released the car? Or did you have to stay outside the box/ other specifications.

Right, but you said "outside the dimensions AFTER the vehicle is released." My issue is that it will be outside the dimensions BEFORE the vehicle begins its run, however in starting position, it will be within the dimensions. Basically, there is a delay from when I pull the release mechanism to when the vehicle is released and begins the run.

I think that you should fix that, but I doubt most event supervisors would really look into it with that much detail. Better safe than sorry though.

Ok so I my OPINION, this would be ok, but the delay before the car starts to move would be counted in your time-score...
